Lead generation
What a Missed Call Actually Costs a Home-Service Business
You are on a job, hands full, phone buzzing in your pocket. By the time you check, there is a missed call from a number you don't recognise and no voicemail. You call back an hour later. It rings out.
That customer did not vanish. They called the next company, that company picked up, and they are getting a quote tomorrow morning. You will never know their name, and they will never show up in any report.
Start with what is actually true
A lot of missed-call statistics on agency websites are invented. Three numbers we can stand behind:
- About a quarter of calls to home-service businesses go unanswered (Invoca call data).
- Fewer than 3% of callers sent to voicemail leave a message. The rest call someone else.
- Firms that respond to a lead within an hour are about seven times more likely to have a real conversation than those who wait one more hour (Harvard Business Review, 2011).
Do the arithmetic with your numbers
Pull your phone log for last week and count the calls nobody picked up. Then:
- Missed calls per week × 52 = missed calls a year.
- × the share that were new customers (half is typical; the rest are suppliers and crew).
- × the share who never call back (most of them).
- × your close rate on the leads you do speak to.
- × your average job value.
Eight missed calls a week, half new customers, 60% never call back, 30% close rate, a $4,000 average job: that is roughly 37 lost jobs and about $150,000 a year. Recovering one in four of those pays for any front desk many times over.
"But I call them back"
Two things work against the callback. First, speed: your 6pm callback is competing with the company that answered on the first ring at 2:15pm. Second, when you call back you are now an unknown number on a stranger's phone, and roughly half of those go unanswered (Hiya, State of the Call 2024).
A text does not have either problem. It carries your business name, waits on the lock screen, and gets read before the homeowner has finished shopping your competitors.
